Politics, Power, and Policy Alternatives

Hello austerity readers! Today we have a presentation from one of the long term projects funded by the grant. Dr. Bryan Evans (Ryerson University), David Macdonald (the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives), and J.Z. Garrod (Carleton University) are collaborating on a project to determine how alternative policy proposals can be designed, framed, and advocated for so as to gain traction with policy makers. The team is looking at two cases of progressive policy proposals which were successful - the Canada Child Benefit and Ontario Bill 148 - to determine what factors led to their successful uptake and implementation. They will interview policy makers, civil servants, and non-profit actors to gain insights from all sides of the policy advocacy process. This presentation is a snapshot of their work thus far - a more complete paper and presentation will be delivered in the coming months!
