RDC News: November 2015

Welcome to Mustafa Ornek!

Mustafa Ornek has joined our RDC team as an analyst and will be working with Peter Kitchen during weekdays in the RDC. He replaces Ruben Mercado, who has moved to the SKY RDC in Saskatchewan.

Mustafa is a PhD candidate in Health Policy, specializing in Health Economics here at McMaster University. He has extensive knowledge of the Canadian Community Health Survey, Canadian Health Measures Survey, and linked administrative data sets. He also has experiences with data sets outside of RDC, such as: the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (covers the US, administered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), Immigrant Database (IMDB) 201 2 (Canada, Citizenship and Immigration), and Gallup World Poll (International, Gallup). He welcomes questions and comments from researchers.

New data sets at the RDC:
In the upcoming weeks we will be receiving new data sets and surveys at the McMaster Research Data Centre. Please see the information below. Researchers interested in accessing these data sets are encouraged to submit proposals!

Households and the Environment Survey, 2013
The Households and the Environment Survey (HES) examines the environmental behaviours and practices of Canadian households in relation to air, water, and soil. The overall objective is to use household practices to provide context to scientific measures of water and air quality and greenhouse gas emissions.

The HES is a cross-sectional survey, with the sample selected from respondents to the 2013 Canadian Community Health Survey (January - June). Respondents are asked questions about energy usage and home heating, home water sources, pesticide and fertilizer use, recreational vehicles and outdoor equipment, composting, hazardous waste, and their indoor environment. There is also an Energy Usage component, which asked about home appliances, electronic devices, and energy consumption.

This data set may be of use to researchers interested in pollution, waste, energy consumption, and environmental issues. For further details on this data set, please go to the information page at the Statistics Canada website.
